A contactor is nothing more than an on and off switch for an outside unit. The power is connected and comes in, then various components such as compressors and fan motors are connected for power to come out. These contactors are rated by the voltage of the coils. When working with a contactor, it's not only important to have the correct voltage, but also that the wires are connected and disconnected at the correct terminals. In this CTE video Robert explains why and what the damaging results could be if not done properly.
